Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a medical specialty focused on the unique health needs of pregnant women. This includes preconception, pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal care.

With a patient-centered approach to care, the team at Midatlantic OBGYN works closely with you to cater to your individual needs and develop a birth plan that you’re comfortable with. The OB/GYN experts consider you an active partner in your pregnancy care, and they discuss all your available options and encourage you to participate in the decision-making process.

What can I expect during obstetric care?

You can expect comprehensive obstetric care at Midatlantic OBGYN. The specifics of your care may depend on your medical and gynecological history, where you are in the pregnancy process, and whether your pregnancy is high risk.

At Midatlantic OBGYN, your obstetric care may begin before you’re even pregnant with a visit for preconception planning. During this appointment, your OB/GYN performs a physical and pelvic exam, reviews your medical and family history, as well as your lifestyle habits. Then, your OB/GYN talks to you about any changes you need to make, such as the addition of a prenatal multivitamin or losing weight, to ensure your pregnancy gets off to a healthy start.

Once you’re pregnant, the team at Midatlantic OBGYN schedules regular prenatal care appointments to monitor your health and your baby’s development throughout the 40-week gestational period. For routine low-risk obstetric management, you can expect monthly appointments up through week 28, appointments twice a month between weeks 29 and 35, then weekly visits from week 36 until you have your baby.

In addition to managing your pregnancy, obstetric services at Midatlantic OBGYN also include discussions about your birth plan, including natural birth or cesarean delivery. The full-service OB/GYN practice also offers in-office ultrasound with 3D and 4D capabilities, as well as fetal nonstress testing.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

Midatlantic OBGYN specializes in the management of high-risk pregnancies. Your pregnancy may be considered high risk if you:

  • Are 35 or older or in your teens
  • Are carrying more than one baby (twins, triplets)
  • Have a history of diabetes, heart disease, lupus, or a bleeding disorder
  • Develop preeclampsia or gestational diabetes
  • Have a history of preterm birth or pregnancy loss
  • Have a history of poor obstetric outcomes
  • Have cervical insufficiency
  • Develop fetal complications

With a high-risk pregnancy, you may need more frequent prenatal appointments and additional tests and screenings.
