What is an Ultrasound?

A gynecologic ultrasound is an imaging test that provides a view of the organs in your pelvis, including the:

  • Uterus
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Vagina
  • Bladder
  • Cervix

Gynecological ultrasounds may be conducted externally, with a transducer gliding across your abdomen and lower pelvis, or vaginally, to get a better view of your uterus.

During an ultrasound, sound waves bounce off your organs and any structures within to transmit images to a computer to be evaluated. Ultrasounds are a routine part of prenatal care in Leesburg and Centreville.

Do Ultrasound Screenings Hurt?

Ultrasounds aren’t painful at all. You may feel a little uncomfortable during a vaginal ultrasound as the sterile wand is inserted into the vagina.

You cannot feel, see, or hear sound waves emitted during an ultrasound because they move at a rapid rate. No radiation is emitted during an ultrasound either, so it’s completely safe for a developing baby and the internal organs.

Purpose of an Ultrasound

During pregnancy, you undergo at least two ultrasounds: one to confirm your due date and another to check that your baby’s anatomy is on track for growth. High-risk pregnancies may require more frequent ultrasounds to check the baby and your reproductive organs. You may also undergo a 3D/4D ultrasound to get a defined picture of your growing baby to take home to show your friends and family.

A woman in Leesburg or Centreville may also need an ultrasound to evaluate her reproductive organs if she has symptoms such as abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain, or if sh is having trouble getting pregnant.

If you present with symptoms that suggest fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease, an ultrasound may be in order. The doctors may also use it to check the presence and position of an IUD or to monitor the size of ovarian follicles during infertility treatment. A pelvic ultrasound can also be used to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, in which a pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus.
